The city of Delaware, Ohio, located about 26 miles north of Columbus in west-central Ohio, is a prime location for several impressive tourist attractions. One of the most popular sites is Alum Creek State Park, a popular getaway with numerous outdoor activities available. In addition to its impressive array of activities, Alum Creek State Park has a rich history dating back over 2,000 years to when the Adena Indian culture inhabited the area, constructing impressive mound-like structures that were discovered by archeologists.
Boating
Containing a massive reservoir covering a surface area of more than 3,000 acres, Alum Creek State Park is an ideal location for boating activities. An extensive marina containing 240 slips for boats ranging from 24-32 feet is available, along with fuel, supplies, and food to service all aspects of boating activity. Depending on the area of the reservoir, activities ranging from high-intensity water skiing to kayaking to leisurely paddle boating can all be experienced by individuals.
Camping
One of the top draws of Alum Creek State Park is the availability of campgrounds that are both scenic and convenient. Campsites have full access to electricity and are found both in open and wooded areas, with the most desirable sites overlooking the reservoir. They also contain heated showers, ball courts, playgrounds, and even miniature golf. An equestrian camp is also available with 30 different sites for horseback riders.
Dog Park
An extensive 4-acre park is available for dogs, with separate areas for smaller and larger dogs. This park, known as the Friends of Alum Creek Dog Park, is a perfect area for dogs that enjoy all kinds of outdoor activities. This park also provides water facilities for dogs that enjoy all sorts of water sports.
Hunting
Designated areas for hunting are available for individuals throughout Alum Creek State Park. The northern portion of the park is ideal for squirrel and deer hunting, whereas the southern portion of the park provides great opportunities for rabbit and waterfowl hunting. A valid Ohio hunting license is required for all hunters.
Hiking/Mountain Biking
A variety of hiking trails are available, most of which are relatively minor and require little effort, ranging from .5 to 1.5 miles. However, the Rocks to Roots trail is more strenuous, with a length of 4.1 miles, and would be more appropriate for experienced hikers. 3 different mountain biking trails are also available with varying degrees of difficulty, with the easy trail being 2 miles, the moderate trail 5 miles, and the difficult trail 7 miles.
