Delaware County, Ohio, just north of Columbus in west-central Ohio, is a hotbed for tourist activity. Every year, thousands of people travel to Delaware County to experience a myriad of activities ranging from horse racing to hiking. The Deer Haven Preserve continues to be a top draw to the area, offering many different relaxing and enjoyable activities for individuals of all ages.

Hiking

Covering just under 100 acres of land, the Deer Haven Preserve offers 3 different hiking trails with varying levels of difficulty. The Grass Trail is a very short 10-minute walk with few changes in elevation. The Tree Swallow Trail is a relatively short, easy gravel path with little elevation changes that takes about 20 minutes to complete. The Bent Tree Ridge Trail is a little more involved with moderate elevation changes, also on a gravel path, and takes about 30 minutes to complete. It is important to note that the Grass Trail and Bent Tree Ridge Trail both connect to nearby Havener Park which is comprised of wetlands that contain bluebirds, tree swallows, goldfinches, red-tailed hawks, and both cotton-tailed and white-tailed deer. In total, about 3 miles worth of hiking trails is available between the two adjacent parks.

Visitor Center

Despite being a smaller preserve, the Deer Haven Preserve contains a very nice visitor center open from 9 am to 8 pm Monday-Friday from March to October, and 9 am to 6 pm from November to February. The visitor center is primarily used for business-related events and contains a classroom with a wide assortment of audio/visual equipment, a kitchen with a dishwasher, microwave, and utensils, as well as tables and chairs. It also contains a nature center and library open from 12 pm to 5 pm Monday-Friday.

Bird Sanctuary

The Deer Haven Preserve contains the Amy Clark-Bader Bird Sanctuary, with several feeders and nesting boxes available to attract as many birds as possible. While the sanctuary attracts many resident and migrant birds, special emphasis is made to attract tree swallows, with a separate area specifically designed for them.

Miscellaneous Information

Alcohol is not permitted on the premises, either on the trails or in the visitor center. Pets are also prohibited, due in part to the desire of the preserve to cultivate a peaceful and inviting environment for the many birds residing there. Finally, the preserve also contains a pollinator garden with information provided about how humans and wildlife rely on pollination to survive.
